Bio

Wayne Smith has been the Athletic Director at SUNY Orange for the past twenty years over which time the department has seen many changes and program growth.  Smith began his tenure at Orange in 1999 as a member of the Physical Education faculty and the college’s head baseball coach.  He was named the Director of Athletics at Orange in 2004 and continued coaching baseball through 2016.  There have been many upgrades and improvements to the department over the past two decades.  Smith has been involved in numerous facility upgrades including the building of the college’s baseball and softball fields, new gym floors and other improvements to the PE building.  He oversaw the transition of four of our programs to the NJCAA Division II level; men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball.  The Colt Athletic Hall of Fame began in 2012, and has inducted over 50 past student-athletes, coaches and administrators.    

During his time coaching at Orange, Coach Smith won two regional baseball championships and had numerous players recognized at the Conference, Regional and National levels.  He had many players go on to continue their playing careers at NCAA Division I, II and III programs.

Prior to Orange, Smith was a Division I baseball coach at Radford University and the University of Richmond both located in Virginia.  He also served as the director of home events at Radford during his time there.  He is a graduate of Hartwick College and the University of Richmond.  

Smith lives in Mt. Hope with his wife Keri, and has three grown children.  All three of his children graduated from SUNY Orange.
