Colt Cagers Hold Off Tough Rockland Men
Stifling first half defense keys Orange's victory.
Middletown, NY – This year's Rockland Community College basketball team is different from other recent teams they have had. They are a talented, cohesive, tough as nails, team. From start to finish they are going to compete. Thankfully, this Orange team has a lot of "dog" (a person who is mentally tough and able to perform in important situations) in it also.
The Colts held Rockland, who averages over 80 points a game, to 21 first-half points and 65 for the game as the Colts won 75-65. Orange forced Rockland into shooting only 30% from three-point range for the game. In fact, only one player on Rockland shot better than 50% from the field. In addition, Orange showed their superiority on the boards by outrebounding Rockland by 17.
Orange had three players score in double figures, with Fr. Marquis Gill (Middletown, NY) leading the way with 18. Gill made 4 three-pointers and chipped in with 5 rebounds. His final minute free throws helped ice the game for Orange. Orange So. Tyreke Harewood (Barbados) had a 17-point performance with 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Limited by nagging injuries, Tyreke's minutes were tightly regulated, but when he was on the floor, he was dominant. Fr. Mat Shea (Wallkill, NY) was also feeling a bit under the weather, but did not let that affect his game. Mat tallied 17 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. When Rockland was making a charge late in the second half, Mat's 3 pointers kept the Hawks at bay. Other key performances by Colt players included So. George Patsalos (New Windsor, NY) who had 8 points and 14 rebounds and So. Dan Lans (Spring Valley, NY) showed off his superior mid-range game with 8 points.
Orange's win Thursday night sets up a winner take all conference matchup with Sullivan this coming Tuesday night. Both teams enter that game with only one Mid-Hudson Conference loss each. The winner will be the regular-season champion. Tip-off is slated for 7 in Loch Sheldrake. Orange's season record now stands at 21-4 with the team riding a season long win streak of 13.
