First match of the season ends with the Colts sweeping the Vikings in three sets.
In their last four games against the Vikings of Westchester the Colts have come out victorious in three.
To start the game the Colts managed earn a demanding lead as the Vikings could not find an answer for the phenomenal serving from the Sophomore Libero #7 Alivia Torres who started the 2024 season with a serving ace and continued to dominate and bring the score to 8-0 before the the Vikings were able to tally their first points of the game and later on in that set after a mis-hit from the Vikings hitting the net ending set number one with a score of 25-12 as they showed no signs of letting up and were looking great in their first game of the year.
In the next set the Colts were right where they left off in the first set winning the first few points and forced the Vikings to call their first time out of the second set after a score of 7-2. The Colts had a lot of new faces out on the court as they have just two of their nine athletes who are returners from last year's team. #4 Grace Malzahn, #6 Lily Noteboom, #8 Araceli Ospina, #9 Emily Deserto and #14 Camryn Benjamin were five athletes who have made some huge impacts and have found a groove in the Colts uniform. The freshman setter Ospina and the freshman middle hitter Benjamin connected on some huge plays in the match while the sophomore middle hitter #5 Gabriella Dandrade proved that it didn't matter who was setting her the ball as she was electric with her new freshman setter. #4 defensive specialist Grace Malzahn was all over the place and gave it her all, diving and jumping all over the court and prevented the Vikings from getting points on several occasions followed by some strong kills from outside hitters Lily Noteboom and Emily Deserto.
The last two sets of the match were extremely competitive and back and forth as neither team was able to find an answer for their opponents success. After winning set number two with a score of 25-21 the Colts were in the driver's seat and were just one set away from the victory. As the third set was under way the Colts were the first ones on the court as they were eager and ready to be serving first to start the set, after a few sets for the first time in the 2024 season the Colts were behind in set number three with a score of 4-3 and they did not let that happen for the remainder of the match as they managed to score 5 points to their 1 to bring the score to 8-5 as the Colts did not allow the Vikings to get within three points as the Colts knew what was in store for them after winning the set.
Score is 20-12 and it looks as if the Colts will be walking away with the victory as they need to score just five points to complete the sweep but the Vikings showed no signs of giving up and with just one point away from the victory Coach Convery called a timeout with a score of 24-20 to have her athletes breathe after letting their opponent increase their chances of winning set number three. With the Vikings serving the Colts were able to receive the serve cleanly followed by a beautiful set to give high flying Lily Noteboom the chance to end the game as she did just that and ended the match in high fashion and helped the Colts earn their first win of the 2024 season.
The Colts will have a break before their next game on Thursday September 12th @7:00 EST as the Colts face off against the Hawks of Rockland for their second consecutive home game to start out the year.
