Colts take the Vikings to 5 sets and win after trailing 2 sets to 1
The Colts traveled to Westchester Community College to take on the Vikings of Westchester in a rematch from the Colts first game of the season where they were able to take care of business within three sets and come away with the win in the highest fashion to close out an electrifying first game of the new season. This time around the Vikings were not going to let that happen to them on their own court and were able to find set number one by a score of 25-19 and give the Colts their first lost set as they were 6-0 through 6 sets.
After the first set was complete the Colts were quickly able to regain their momentum and get out to a early lead after the Colts earned 7 points off of errors from the Vikings followed by back to back kills from freshman Araceli Ospina and Grace Malzahn to give them a 12-5 lead and force the Vikings to take their first timeout of the second set. Though the timeout was needed to try and stop what the Colts were doing but unfortunately for the Colts that was not the case as they were outscored 10-5 giving the Colts a 22-10 lead late in the second set before they were able to turn things around and score EIGHT unanswered points to bring the score within 4 points. That was until Lily Noteboom decided their rally was over and recorded a streak ending kill to make the score 23-18 and after some nice serving from Noteboom leading to atticking errors the Colts would end up winning set two to even the score at 1-1 through two sets.
In the third set it was the Colts who started off the set with the first points but after both the Colts and the Vikings let up five or more unanswered points as the score went from the Vikings leading 5-1, to the Colts leading 7-5, to the Vikings again leading 9-7 before the first time out was taken. From that point on it seemed as if neither team was able to stop or prevent the other from going on a scoring spree as there were seven different times where both teams scored 2 or more unanswered points. After a back and forth barrage the Colts came within just one point after trailing by 5 to make the score 18-19. Unfortunately the Colts were unable to continue the success they were having and would end up letting the Vikings score 6 unanswered points to end set 3 and give the Colts a 2-1 deficit going into the fourth set.
In set number four the Colts were again able to get the first lead of the game but the Vikings were quick to respond as the score was tied at 6-6. Unlike the rest of the match it seemed as if both teams figured the other out as it was not until the Colts scored their 17th and would go on a four point spree giving the Colts the lead after an exciting back and forth couple of rallies and as both teams become tired more and more errors and missed opportunities start to occur and with the score tied at 22-22 Emily Deserto came up to serve and knew she needed to end the set and get the win. Coming from back to back Kills from Grace Malzahn and Gabriella Dandrade the Colts would win set number 4 and tie the score at 2-2 with the 5th and final set left both teams would look to defeat their opponent and go home.
With the fifth and final set underway the Colts showed that they wanted this win as they opened the set with NINE unanswered points to give them a 9-0 lead in a first to 15 set. The Vikings showed no signs of giving up and would end up making the set close as the final score was Colts 15 the Vikings 9 giving the Colts the win in the 5th set giving them a 3-0 record through the first three games of the year
The Colts will be returning home to take on the Falcons of Dutchess County Community College on Thursday September 19th at 7:00 PM
